Professor Dr. Naveed Akhtar Malik has joined as Rector, Virtual University of Pakistan with effect from December 16, 2013. Dr. Malik is also the founding Rector of Virtual University of Pakistan (2001-2012).

He was conferred the Sitara-e-Imtiaz on his endless efforts and performance in the field of education on March 23, 2008 by the Governor of the Punjab. Dr. Malik holds a doctorate degree from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T., U.S.A) in the field of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, specializing in Digital Signal Processing. Dr. Malik also holds the Jinnah Award and the Quaid-e-Azam scholarship for his performance in the M.Sc. (Physics) examination.
He was the first chairman of the Department of Computer Science at the Punjab University and later on became the founding Rector of the Virtual University of Pakistan (2001-2012). He has now been re-appointed in Virtual University of Pakistan as a rector on December 16, 2013.
He spearheaded the efforts of setting up the Virtual University that would utilize Information Technology as a force multiplier to deliver quality, affordable education across the length and breadth of the country. Dr. Malik took charge of the project in October 2001 and the Virtual University of Pakistan was formally inaugurated by the President on March 23, 2002.
Dr. Malik has also been selected by the IDRC, Canada to coordinate a multi-country research effort in Distance Learning Technologies in the South East Asian region, thereby bringing further honor to the country.
